Have you misplaced any of your annuals?

We found the place they have been hiding and have extra copies of most years. Some years we have a plethora of extras and some not many at all. We are selling them at the current price of printing annuals ($50.00). If you would like to replace that missing annual call or email the alumni office to see if we have the year you are looking for. CLASS OF 1963

Shirley (Vanveldhuizen) Miller 1/9/06 – Lynn and I celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary.  We were married by former RLA Bible teacher Elder Seibel.  We met at Rio Lindo and have fond memories of our experience at Rio Lindo.  Lynn will be retiring as Regional Director of Child Support in February and we will be devoting much of our time to our three adult children, their partners and our two incredible grandsons.

Jeanie (Baldwin) Gregory 1/9/06 - I thoroughly enjoyed our 40th year reunion at Rio, a couple of years ago. I urge anyone who has any doubts about going to their reunions to GO! It was a great experience. I'm still living close to Healdsburg, in St. Helena, where I have a property management business. My son, who recently graduated from architecture, was married this September and my daughter is expecting a baby in February. It will be the first grandchild so we are excited about it. Life has treated me well, I don't have a lot of complaints, except that time certainly goes by too quickly.

Michael Zinn 8/16/06 - Attorney since 12/20/74, currently officed in Anaheim Hills, CA. Married to Candy since 6/13/69, and have two children, Kimberly and John.  Also have one grandchild through son John, named Cameron.

Glenice (Van Scyoc) Stanford 8/14/06 - I am a senior at SOSU in Durant. Ok. I will receive my degree in Criminal Justice in May 2007.

Richard Kelley 9/5/06 - My wife, Patty (Haight), and I now live in the Northwest in the town of Deer Park which is near Spokane, WA. We have been here for four years. I was a pastor for 35 years, mostly in the Central CA Conference until in 2001 I was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. We have a great God for I am now 3 1/2 years beyond what the statistics said I should live. We moved here because the air is clean - especially compared to the Fresno, CA area which is one of the most polluted areas of the country and to get out of as much stress as possible (I had to retire from pastoring). Our oldest daughter, Anissa, lives up here now and our youngest daughter, Melissa, lives in CO. Currently I am on my third plateau.

Robert Stumph 9/21/06 - Hurricane Rita made landfall here September 24, 2005. I had evacuated three days prior and was safe from the storm. ( My wife, Gail, was in Washington State at the time). When I returned to Port Arthur a few days later, I discovered that my apartment had the roof blown off and as a result we lost nearly everything in the house. To top that off, one of the churches I pastor suffered a complete loss. God helped us get back on our feet through the coverage we had with insurance. But the church was severely underinsured and we have to raise money we never expected to have to raise. About $500,000.00. in order to rebuild. Plans are underway for a new building and the old building will be demolished in a few days, October 3, 2006 in preparation for building a new structure on the site. God is good to us and we are blessed in so many ways.  Just looking to the blessed hope. Bob Stumph, pastor, Community Seventh-day Adventist Church, PO Drawer H, Groves, TX 77619

Glenice (Van Scyoc) Stanford 2/1/07 - I am 61 years old and finally will graduated from SOSU in May with a Criminal Justice degree.

CLASS OF 1964

Paul Conner 1/9/06 - I have been in dental practice here in Wisconsin for 35 years, since graduating from Loma Linda in 1971. We have two children; Misty Wood(34), who has her own 6 and 4 year-old kids. They live in the Minneapolis area. Our son Nicholas(32) lives in Detroit, and has 2 girls, 7 and 5, and another little boy in the oven. I spend most of my free time working out, and in the summer doing road biking. I ride in a 100 mile ride every September, and we have a great time. We enjoy giving Bible studies, and doing church work. I plan on working at least another 6-7 years. We have gotten in the habit of leading mission trips every year, going to such places as Peru, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic,  and Russia. That 's what keeps us going.

Lynn  Miller 1/9/06 Shirley (Vanveldhuizen ('63) and I celebrated our 41st wedding anniversary.  We were married by former RLA Bible teacher Elder Seibel.  We met at Rio Lindo and have fond memories of our experience at Rio Lindo.  I will be retiring as Regional Director of Child Support in February and Shirley and I will be devoting much of our time to our three adult children, their partners and our two incredible grandsons.  Best wishes, Lynn

Donna (Hines) Anderson 1/9/06 - My, it sure makes you feel like you must be getting old when this year's alumni weekend will be your daughter's 20th. reunion! The months and years really march by quickly! My husband Dave and I enjoy our wilderness home among the coyotes and cougars in the hills above Ukiah. The peace and serenity of the place makes it feel almost sacred. We enjoy creating flower beds, maintaining our small orchard, and watching the "wild life". During the week days, we both are well occupied serving the sick and infirmed at a gastroenterologist's office and the recovery room at our Adventist hospital.  We also are very active and involved at church- Dave as the Treasurer and I as the Clerk.  We both sing in the choir and just finished our annual Christmas cantata, a beautiful musical re-enactment of Jesus' birth that we put on in two sessions for the community.  We were pleased to have "Mom" Pride join us this year as one of the sopranos!

Jacqueline Wagner 4/16/06 - Am working as a Social Worker and currently working on a graduate degree in gerontology. No, I never did marry. Yes, had opportunity, but something always stood in the way of it becoming a reality. Sometimes sad reasons sometimes reasons that worked out well for my benefit. Hope to hear from you.

Jennifer Crane 8/16/06  - My life is same day in and day out - still working two jobs here in Salem, OR--Office Administrator for Regional Aflac Office, #1 in State of Oregon and weekend Receptionist at large Retirement Center (3 weekend's month).  So you see social life in Salem isn't much!!  Can say I finally have a grandchild, Brody Eugene Barr, born March 27, 2007 and another one due to arrive December 29 in Minnesota!! -  have plane ticket to fly January l.  Now waiting for daughter #3 to announce - kept telling them I was getting too old to have grandkids, only trouble is being so far away from them.  At least 2 daughters live at Monterey Bay Academy so try to see them more often.  Won't be long till we can plan our 45 reunion, hard to believe!!

CLASS OF 1965

Christine (Chris Register) Hill 7/25/05 - I missed my 40th last year because it was and probably will be forever on the first weekend of April. It was the same weekend of the SECC teen raft trip which also has been that date for 36 years.  Colorado Pathfinder teens join the SECC Pathfinder Teens every year for this fabulously fun trip. Since my husband and I are the Pathfinder Coordinators for the RMC, we always go on that trip.  So I may never get to attend the alumni weekend again. We will see. Puddles (Carol Pudliner Ellstrom '65) used to go on the raft trip also but now lives in Minnesota. Anyway, that wasn't for printing, just more information than you probably wanted. So I will write something you can print. This next April, 2006 it will be 41 years since I graduated from Rio. Wow! That is so hard to digest.  So many things have happened in those 41 years, it would take a book to tell it all.  So, I won't - just a few highlights. I have been married for 39 years to the same wonderful man.  He's a keeper. I have two successful grown children, my oldest, a girl is nearly 38 and my youngest, a boy is 36.  They each have one child but I recently inherited two more grandkids from my son's new love. At 52 I went back to school to finally get a college degree.  The first time I was in college (PUC) I ran off and got married on my first Rio alumni weekend.  I think I was the second in my class to marry, just behind Mike Flyer & Gloria Anderson. It took me 5 1/2 years to get a BSBM/E-Business degree while working full time and then God put me where I have been being groomed for all my life. I am very proud and humbled to be the Assistant Director of the Denver Adventist Community Service Center - AKA - ACS Community LIFT, which stands for Life Intervention for Families in Transition.  We are the 3rd largest ACS in the U.S. and just recently went through a huge remodel project. I love doing the Lord's work, it makes it fun to get up and go to work each morning. Since I have student loans to pay, I probably won't retire until the Lord comes, but it's okay when you love what you do. My husband Don has been working for Porter Adventist Hospital for 20 years in Plant Operations. He is a cabinet maker/furniture builder both by vocation and by hobby.  So there you have it.  Come out and visit us in the winter, the skiing is the best anywhere and we have a guest room.

Cheryl Orser 1/9/06 -  After teaching for 31 years in the elementary (10 of which were in Malawi, Africa), I moved to the Laurelbrook Academy library. I do the things librarians do, but also teach students with special needs. This includes teaching foreign students the English language. This year I'm teaching a Freshman boy from Russia and a Freshman girl from Haiti. This is actually my tenth year here at Laurelbrook. The campus is beautiful ,and located five miles up on Dayton mountain. My father passed away about two years ago and my mother came to live with me. The most significant thing in my life is that I just finished writing a 29 chapter book about the fairness of God, entitled "A Vivid View and a Fair  Chance to Choose."

Tom and Jeanne (O’Neill) Larsen 8/16/06 - Still stuck in Lodi. Kids all through school, one 8 month old grandson. Tom still teaching at Lodi Academy, Jeanne works the orthopedic floor at Sutter General Sacramento. Dirt Bikes for Tom, Grandson for Jeanne. Health holding, retirement looming, both happy!

Earl and Gail (Selby) Aagaard 8/161/06 - Gail and I made our first trip to Africa this summer.  Only a week, and not for touring game parks or anything.  I was invited by the G.C. Education Department to come to Valley View University (http://www.vvu.edu.gh/) in Ghana, West Africa, to give some lectures on Integrating Faith and Science in the classroom.  There were 25-30 college and university profs (plus a few administrators) there – mostly from Africa, but representatives from three other continents, as well.  There were four lecturers, in all.  One from the G.C., one from Mexico, one from Central Africa, and then me.  My lectures were titled: Can a Believer be a Scientist, Mere Scientists and True Believers, and Dealing with Darwinism in a Christian University.  We were taken on a couple of excursions: to an Arboretum on the grounds of a former colonial governor’s mansion, and an all-day trip during which we visited a national park with a rope walkway through the treetops and a slavers’ castle (one of a dozen or so along the coast of Ghana).  On the way home, we stopped in England to visit friends and tour East Anglia and the southeast coast.  Anyone interested can read my trip log and look at some of the photos at http://ogblog.net/index.php.  Less than a week after returning to TN, we drove to Lincoln, NE to visit our daughter Laura, and see what we could of our grand-daughter (they promise) who will make her appearance “outside” in late September.  Pictures available on Laura and Leslie’s website, http://camacho.tv/.

B J Stearns Bannister 8/16/06 -2006 was our 25Th Wedding Anniversary and my loving husband Reginald sold his coin collection and took me on a 7 day cruise to Mexican Rivera!  A once in a lifetime thing!  I really enjoyed trying out my shaky Spanish at the three ports we went to.  Mostly I was impressed at my husband's sacrifice and the incredible vegetarian dishes that I enjoyed on the cruise!

This is also the year my father GE Stearns returned to the West Coast from a 20 year stay in Georgia.  He and Mom are at Yountville. 306 Vista Apt. 132, Yountville, Ca. 94599. stearns132@yahoo.com  707-945-1069  This summer  I have twice returned to Oregon to care for a previous patient, 13 yrs old. One of the trips (her family vacation) took me to Niagara Falls for the first time!
My garden flourishes and we are eating green beans, lettuce, tomatoes, corn, water melon, cucumbers, beets, Swiss chard, turnip greens, Hubbard squash, crook neck squash and of course zucchini !   And I am writing a biography and am on the 8Th chapter.  I am sure you are all just as busy.  Don't hesitate to look me up!

Earl & Gail (Selby) Aagaard 1/30/07 - Gail and I are finishing up our third year living in Tennessee. I'm teaching in the SAU Biology Department, and Gail teaches clinicals for SAU's Nursing Department. We're having a great time singing Sacred Harp (see http://awakemysoul.com/) and we get to visit my parents up in Kentucky every month. Most exciting, our daughter and her husband gave us a grand-daughter in September, so we're officially "old folks" now. It's fourteen hours to Lincoln, NE from here, but we don't seem to mind all that much - a few photos are attached. We won't be at Homecoming this year, but we'll be thinking of everyone, and the wonderful times we had at Rio. All our classmates and friends should look us up if they're in the Chattanooga area - come and enjoy some Southern hospitality while we catch up on the good old days! EARL

BJ Stearns Bannister2/6/07  - I am still living in Arizona, semi retired, gardening and rediscovering the domestic arts.  I think I took a class in Domestic Sciences!  Our youngest of five girls is getting married in September so we are looking at an empty nest syndrome, a disease my husband has been trying to catch for the past two years.  It was freezing here this winter!  We had ice in the fountain, and our citrus trees look like dried flower arrangements.  I am still working on my book, a biography of J H Harris.  He is not expected to live into the summer of 2007 and I am caught up in anticipatory grieving.  I think it is a hazard for people approaching the 60th Birthday, (I am not confirming or denying)  Friends from my days at Rio Lindo are ever more precious as the years pass, so look me up.

Linda (Frolich) Sipes 3/12/07 - We still live in Alaska and now when we travel we go to see our kids.  We have a 4 year old
granddaughter, Kalin, and a brand new grandson, Nickolas. Michael and I sold our business several years ago and now we are working on another tourist-related project.  I think we will always be in Alaska. Say "hi" to all my classmates and I enjoy hearing about everyone.

CLASS OF 1966

Julia (Aitken) Schmitz-Leuffen 7/20/05 - OK, as that 2006 is the fortieth for the class of 1966, I decided that I would make a special effort to be there for a change. I (still) live in Switzerland, these things take a bit of planning. Widowed five years ago, I still work part time, one of my children is home> Scott, 18 and the other partially, Sven, 27 received his Masters in Engineering from the Swiss Polytechnical School in Lausanne and is currently looking for a job in Hydrology. The years fly by, I still love to travel and these days am usually in the USA twice a year in order to be with my mother - who turns 86 this year. Love hearing from former classmates and friends (I did do a stint a year or so ago on Classmates, but somehow just never got back to it once I got my new computer up and running. Only ran into a couple of my class though- guess we aren't all that technically oriented?). In any case love to see and hear from some of you.

Diane (McManus) Johnston 7/25/05 - My husband and I now live in Cloverdale, CA. We moved after his retirement as VP of Marketing of several high tech companies in Santa Clara, CA. His last company did a successful IPO. We love living here away from traffic and smog. After finishing college, I worked at various high tech companies. My last job was working for 15 years at Fujitsu Microelectronics in administration working with the Japanese in Japan and the USA, a great learning experience. It was an amazing time with technology moving very fast, as it today. We have five children between us. I have two girls, one married with my first granddaughter who was born 3 months early, and is doing great! (This is another whole story.) I also have 8 step-grandchildren that are a part of my life. My second daughter is single and a buyer for a high tech company in Santa Clara , CA. Two of the three boys followed their father and work in high tech after graduating from Berkeley UC school of Engineering. The third is in car retail. Three of our children managed to graduate university. All are employed and own there own homes. We feel very blessed for this, and are doing some traveling and really enjoying life. PS: Some of you may remember my folks. They are now in their mid eighties. Dad us failing some, and Mum is OK for now. They live near Medford, OR, so we travel up there as much as possible.

Helmuth Fritz 7/25/05 Sue and I have moved back to Washington State primarily to be closer to our only grandchild, Abby, who will have a new baby brother within the next month. Helmuth continues to enjoy consulting, research, and coaching with clinical trials utilizing vascular ultrasound.  Sue is the most wonderful "nana" any young child could ask for and enjoys babysitting Abby at least two days a week.  We thoroughly enjoy our 10 acre rural farm that includes a garden producing among other things delicious blue berries that Abby and grandpa are especially enjoying right off the bushes.  We feel very spiritually blessed by receiving the various church sponsored and church-supportive nurturing TV and radio programming options now available by satellite.  We highly recommend it as a way to stay very connected with the rapid progress of spreading the gospel to all the world in this generation.

Carolyn (Gregory) Sheller7/25/05 - "Hey!" --that's "Hi" from Delaware -- where my husband Ken Scheller and I have been since 1988. He has pastored and I have taught grade school here in Delaware and Maryland on the "Eastern Shore" for 17 years.  I taught in a one teacher school for 6 years and then kindergarten with combinations of grades 1, 2 and 3 for the last 11 years. I met Ken Scheller in San Francisco where we got married in 1975. I taught 7 years there after 3 years at Miramonte in Mountain View. We moved to the East in 1980 when Ken was called to the GC as assistant manager in the Transportation Department (moving missionaries around the globe). We lived in Silver Spring, MD, and I taught at Spencerville Jr. Academy those 8 years. Ken decided to return to pastoring, and that is when we moved to the "Eastern Shore" where we have worked together in the church and church schools here. I have racked up 35 years of teaching in Adventist schools and have "collected" hundreds of children, all I call mine, and looking forward to seeing them in the Kingdom! Ken and I both have family in California. We trek out there every summer and then some in between times. Last spring break coincided with Rio Alumni Weekend, and it was great to spend Sabbath there connecting with friends and classmates. Would love to do it again next spring for the 40'th reunion, the Lord willing!

Kathi (Williams) Robbins 1/12/06 - Here we are half way through the academic year and only months away from our 40th reunion on the 8th of April (I keep emphasizing that because it is the second weekend of the month, rather than the traditional first, and I would not want you to be too early... although, a week to vacation in Sonoma County would be a lovely choice!). Several of you have already contacted me, indicating that you will be here! The latest was from Tom and Nancy Adams! This is going to be soooooo much fun!!!!!!!! Those of you who would like to join us for dinner the 7th, please let me know by April first. (email: kathleen7000@sbcglobal.net or by phone: 707 838-0855 or you can post a note to me: 9502 Flamenco Court, Windsor, CA 95492.) Those who would like to go out to dinner the evening of the 8th at "Charlie's", please do the same so I know how many to reserve for! It is a lovely place at the golf course. We have some new hotels to choose from. The golf courses look really nice. Bike riding in the wine country is also lovely.... but I do my rides on my Vespa, now! See you very soon!

Brenda (Butka) John 1/9/06 - I am a pulmonologist at Vanderbilt, married to Tom John, who is a rheumatologist. Our oldest daughter, Liz, is a sophomore at Reed College. Our second daughter, Rachel, is at Earlham College, and India is at a local high school. This last year was remarkable for a wonderful trip to Bhutan, which was followed, rather improbably, by a quick trip to Saudi Arabia as a guest of the Saudi government to assess the condition of a member of the royal family. We continue to live on our small farm near Nashville, with cows, donkeys, dogs, cats, finches, koi, a chinchilla and a great blue heron who spends most of his time on our creek.

Bob Sanford 1/9/06 - I have been teaching at Sacramento Adventist Academy for 31 years. I live in Newcastle,CA with my wife and two daughters. I’d love to hear from classmates.

Gary Piner 1/9/06 - See Starr Piner class of '67 below

ADVANCED ENDODONTICS
As you can see, we are cutting down our travel a little, although we'll see how well we did at the end of 2006! We are very excited to announce the addition of some hands-on courses to be held IN Santa Barbara starting next July. There have been so many changes in endodontics since we stopped our seminars in 2000 and we want to share the new ideas, technologies and techniques! We would love to see you in Santa Barbara! Cliff has invented some new products coming to market first of the year and we're all very excited about them.
FAMILY NEWS Family is doing great and the grandchildren count is holding at 4! Lisette (our daughter) and Dwayne Kershner have Isaac (6 1/2) and Eva (5). Lori (our daughter) and Mazy Ostovany have Noah (5) and Sophia (2 1/2). All four children attend Montessori School together and their Moms volunteer when possible. Lisette joined Advanced Endodontics this year and Dwayne runs his retail business on eBay. Lori is still working with us (8 years now!) and she and Mazy have been very busy overseeing construction of their new home which is on the lot next to our house. We send everyone all the best in the year ahead! Cliff and Phyllis

Diane (McManus) Johnston 3/8/06 - My Father passed away in February this year, after a painful struggle with cancer. My Father and Mother were married for 66.5 years. They knew each other almost 70 years. My older brother Dan McManus (‘67) and I were both adopted. As time has gone by, there is not a day I don't thank God for the best parents in the world. They worked hard to give all three of us a Christian education. They had great faith in Jesus, and taught us to just love him, and live by faith each day until his coming. Michele, the oldest daughter (married), has my granddaughter. Mark and Michele came out to visit July 2003 from Indiana. Michele was six months pregnant and went into labor. Joelle was born at Sutter hospital in Santa Rosa at 1lb 15 oz, and 12 inches long with the help of one of my Rio classmate Virginia Weirich (‘65). Can you imagine not seeing someone for some 30 years, and there she was. She was such a comfort. Sutter sent Joelle to San Francisco for two months. Both parents had great jobs that let them work from SF. They stayed at the Ronald McDonald house. What a wonderful program. We are happy Joelle is doing wonderful with no problems and turned three years old July 7th 2006.

Sally (Saulsbury) Earhart 5/12/2006 We received news that Sally passed away May 10th 2006 after giving her best to fight off ovarian cancer. She is survived by her husband Dennis. Sally had taught third grade for years a Escondido Adventist Academy and will be missed by students and faculty as well as her friends from her days here at Rio Lindo Academy.

John “Ed” McGee 7/13/06 Ed’s mother informed the Alumni Office that Ed passed away April 20th 2006 after suffering a second and third heart attack the 19th. He is survived by his mother Laura McGee Huffman brother Gerald and sister Carolyn Hookinson. Ed lived in Portland Oregon area and had been unable to work since his first heart attack in 2004. He actually drove to Rio for his 40 year reunion, but because he was not feeling well never got out of his car. He grew up moving with his parents who were teachers in the SDA school system. He lived in Alaska, Oregon, Idaho, and California before attending college and being on his own. Ed worked for several companies during his career the last being Alberson’s Supermarkets in Portland as a load dispatcher. He enjoyed reading collecting stamps and coins, gold panning, and traveling. He is missed by his family and friends will be remembered as friendly, kind-hearted person who always spoke well of others.

Julia (Aitken) Schmitz-Leuffen 8/16/06 - Greetings to all of you who attended our 40th - we had a great time - and those of you who didn't make it, know that we are already gearing up for the 45th at which point Doug Price wants all of those who played in the band to be perfect (again) - ha. My life in Geneva is topsy-turvy what with visits to the in-laws in Germany, a visit to a friend who moved back to the UK, mad dashes to the place I rent in the mountains for the summer, etc. My older boy who is now an engineer with the Shaw Group in Concord, CA will be home for a week and I am greatly looking forward to that visit. The younger son got his International Baccalaureat and is currently exploring life (i.e. he doesn't know what he wants to do yet). I keep (very) busy, but love hearing from former friends and classmates. I am in the USA twice a year to visit my mother in Loma Linda too so perhaps even see some of you. e-mails are religiously answered.

Claudia (Earl) Lai 9/6/06 - I live in the country in beautiful Oregon.  I've been up here for 14 years.  I live in a place that is very secluded in the woods, with horses all 'round (not mine, unfortunately) and wild critters that make an appearance frequently.  Have three cats that are my babies.  It's a peaceful existence, which I love at this stage of life!    I have been doing glass art for over 30 years.  Working with fused glass mostly now.  Here's the web site if you want to see what I do.  If you check out the kiln-formed glass gallery it will show you some of my pieces.  www.cg-artglass.com is where you can find it.  Kids.........daughter Cherie, is a speech pathologist, oldest son, Caine, is a computer programmer, youngest son, Clay, works at a company that does beautiful concrete art for high-end homes.  They all live in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Linda (Porter) Carlyle 2/1/07- Pacific Press is currently reprinting my book series for children, A Child's Steps to Jesus.

CLASS OF 1967

Alan Abbott 7/27/05 - Over the past four years I have been blessed to leave  traditional full time work and take my passion and energy for healthcare management across the country.  I have been enjoying consulting and interim management in the areas of surgical services and critical care from California to Florida.  Currently I am doing some work with the Florida Hospital system in Orlando.  Between jobs I have experienced some special travel events, and on an ongoing basis I enjoy the activity as president of our great alumni association.  Being on the school board has only deepened my interest and commitment to Rio's very bright future.  I always look forward to Alumni Weekends when we can enjoy time together bridging the big gap over the years.

Donna (McKelvey) McClain 1/9/06- Rio has come back in my life this year, since my nephew, Greg McKelvey, is a junior there.  So, I thought I would send a short update on my whereabouts. I have worked at Porter Adventist Hospital in Denver, Colorado  for 27 years.  I am currently the executive assistant to the CEO. I have worked in administration for the last 16 years, which includes assisting the last 5 CEOs. I have been married to Dick McClain for 36 years, and we have two daughters Jessica 31 and Lisa 27, no son in-laws or grandchildren yet. Dick has been in construction ever since he graduated from Union College, where we met. We live in Castle Rock, Colorado on 40 acres. As a hobby, Dick enjoys raising Texas longhorn cattle, along with quarter horses. We enjoy spending time with our three border collies and four outdoor barn cats. During the summer we spend a good amount of time gardening, both vegetable and flower, and in the winter we try to get up to the Rocky Mountains to snowboard, which we started doing when we turned 40. Needless to say we get a lot of "you do what" when we tell people we are still doing it at the ages 56 and 57.

Starr (Bowen) Piner 1/9/06 - Greetings, from the not so far away land of Napa.  That’s right Gary and I haven’t moved any significant distance in the last thirty nine years.  We continue to be very involved with the family businesses and recently our eldest son, Jeremy has come on board as operations manager of the ambulance company.  Previously he had been managing our bicycle shop.  We love life and living it.  In 2001 Gary had a zipper installed in his chest, better known as a four way bypass.  That seemed to cause him to rethink some of his priorities in life and we have gone helicopter skiing in February every year since 2002.  We work hard at being in shape since most of the individuals we ski with are in their forties.  We have met wonderful people and made many new friends.  Our four grandchildren are growing up fast and we expect to add another one sometime in April.  Speaking of April we will be attending Gary’s fortieth reunion and hope to meet up with many classmates and friends that weekend!  See you there!!

Rick & Linda (Gregory) Williams8/16/06 - We both continue working at Loma Linda University. We are happy to be on the West Coast and are looking forward to reuniting with classmates at our 40th reunion! Hope you all are planning to attend!

Calvin D. Knipschild 8/14/06  - Just returned from Nashville, Tennessee where I saw many of you personally but unfortunately not everybody.  So I will share with those of you I did not get a chance to talk to what has been happening in my life.  It's hard to believe that this coming year will be my 40th year class reunion at Rio Lindo Academy. I'm in my third year of 'retirement' at Loma Linda Academy where I head up the choral department.  I had the privilege of presenting a breakout session at Nashville and about 70-75 fellow musicians attended.  I made a presentation on 'Music Ministry' and how we need to do more of it in our music departments.  My summer choir from Loma Linda Academy, also performed at Nashville and received a marvelous reception from the crowd of educators. I had a wonderful time and got to meet many 'seasoned' musicians as well as new beginning musicians and we had a great time sharing and learning from each other. I am still directing Christian Edition and we are in our twenty-fifth year.  It has been a tremendous part of my life and the Lord has lead us to so many places where we have made new friends while we witnessed to them through music, about the love of God and His salvation for each of us through Jesus Christ.  It is truely humbling to see how the Lord can use us to lead others to Him if we just give Him our time and our talents. If any of my classmates are in the Southern California area stop by Loma Linda Academy and please say hi. I would love to see you and chat with you about the 'good-ole-times' at Rio.  Love to all and have a great 2006-2007 year.

Judie (Wagenleitner) Squires 1/30/07 - Last year, 2006,  was an awesome year. In April my son, Mark, and his wife gave me a baby boy, they named Jonah. He weighted in at 10 pounds 11 ounces. He is such a joy. My whole insides just light-up when he smiles. Then in November my other son, Jeff, was married. It is so great to finally have some girls in the family. The boys both made me proud, they chose such sweet christian girls. I could not have selected better. Looking forward to seeing everyone at alumni.

Martha (Hunter) Larimer 2/6/07 - My husband John and I moved from Yuba City to Mount Shasta about a year ago.  John is still practicing law in Yuba City but doing most of his work by remote access from Mount Shasta.  I am working part time as a bookkeeper as well as raising two children, Daniel Gonzales,  age 11 and Marisela Ramirez, age 9.  Daniel and Sela are brother and sister. They came to us through unusual circumstances but are certainly here because God placed them with us.  We, kids included, love being in the mountains.  My oldest son, Daniel, 33 (yes I have two Daniels) lives here in Mount Shasta.  Julie,31,  lives in Ohau, Hawaii with our beautiful 2 year old grandaughter.  Her husband Eric is career Navy.  We are very proud of him.  Andrew, 28,  is married and lives in Sacramento.  Andrew is a computer technician for Sutter Hospitals.  Ann, 24, lives in Sacramento and works as a legal Secretary for a downtown  law firm.  We are very blessed.

Rose Marie Walter 8/14/06 - For the past 25 years or so I have been teaching English and A.P. English to high school students. I've taught in Adventist schools, mostly boarding academies, until the last 16 years when I was teaching at Walla Walla Valley  Academy. Then, after teaching for 25 years, I decided it was time for a new career! I'm currently taking a M.L.S. at Indiana University in Bloomington. I'm planning to become an archivist, in a museum, historic society or wherever else I find a good job, as long as it is in the northwest. It has been interesting to live in the Midwest again, but I will head back to mountains and the ocean as soon as ever I can!  I'd love to hear from people I knew while I was at Rio. meanwhile, all the best to each of you.

CLASS OF 1969

Terry Dietrich 7/25/05 - We had a wonderful summer. Terry spent 6 weeks at Daryl and Lynette Galusha's (class of 69) home in Australia painting a 40' mural on their barn in Cooroy, in Queensland. I flew over for the last 3 weeks and had some much needed R & R and had the opportunity to see some of Australia. It was wonderful.  Terry (class of 69) still teaches in Chattanooga, TN and I (Pam Smith Dietrich (class of 70) work at Southern Adventist University. Our daughter Nikki(30)works as a feed rep for large animals and her husband Bryant has his own business here in the Collegedale area. Our son Mark is in his last year of Nurse Anesthesia school and his wife is a Nurse Anesthetist.

Brenda (Jackson) Muth 1/9/06 - I'm the registrar at Paradise Adventist Academy and also teach Computer Keyboarding and do the school Newspaper.  My greatest enjoyment is tagging along on the Senior Class trips; thanks to them, I finally made it to Oahu, England and Washington, DC.  I have also have fun with card making.  My children are grown and have flown the coop.  Daughter Joy is married and has a masters in piano performance, but currently drives 18-wheelers with her husband and bird, cross country for United Van Lines.  Son Jeremy has one class to take in order to graduate from PUC, and is making big bucks working in a restaurant in the Napa Valley.  Husband, Stan, is a Home Health RN. Life is good; the only thing that could make it better is to have grandchildren, instead of a grandbird!

Aileen (Siaw) Butler1/9/06 I have been married 33-1/2 years to Glen Butler and we have three gorgeous grown daughters: Lisa, Dallas-Ann and Michelle. We raised them in Gladstone, OR, a suburb of Portland. Lisa and Dallas-Ann are both married and still live in Portland. Michelle lives and works in Seattle, WA. Glen and I moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area in 2001 and currently live in Fremont. I have worked for the federal government for the last 30+ years, currently working for the famous (or is it infamous?) FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) in Region IX in Oakland, CA. Glen just recently got a job with FEMA as a DAE (Disaster Assistance Employee) in support of the Katrina disaster. These guys actually go out and work in the disaster areas. He is currently working in the Joint Field Office (JFO) located in Baton Rouge, LA. He says the JFO, before the holidays, had over 5,000 employees comprised mostly of local hires; since then they are down to about 3,000 employees. His job is paying the ambulance companies involved in the disaster. He finds it very interesting and has gone down to New Orleans to see the devastation. He says the worst devastation was in Saint Bernard Parish where out of 29,000 homes, only 45 remained! The disappointing part is he works for 45 days, then comes home for 10 days. So right now I live alone until he rotates home! I am a member of the East Palo Alto SDA Church and head the Community Services Department.

Bobbi (Brandlin) McConnell 8/28/06 - It has been a very busy year remodeling the house, and buying a duplex in Spokane (for that looming thing called 'retirement'). My husband, Andrew, of 20 years, teaches Math and Computers at Napa Valley College. I am in independent bookkeeper for various clients which gives me flexibility to care for my father and see the grandchildren! Katelyn is 9 and Jonathan is 7. My two daughters are living in So. California working and going to school. Andrea is a radiology assistant tech and taking prerequisites for nursing. Meghan is taking a para-legal course at UCLA. I am missing our classmate and friend, Nancy Weber Cromer, deceased now two years. I wish all of you new Rioites a wonderful school year!

Brenda (Jackson) Muth 2/6/07 - All the news is good at my house and jobs remain the same.  I will be a grandma for the first time in March; it's a girl and we're terribly excited.  I was also privileged to accompany a friend on a 7 day trip to Hong Kong and China.  It was a whirlwind adventure, but worth it.

Janice (Mertle) & David Cordis  11/21/06 Living in Redwood Valley CA and just celebrated our 38th  wedding anniversary. Enjoying life, health, two children and 2 grandchildren.  David works for a major winery and Janice is semi-retired.

Mary (Blanes) Rosenbach 11/30/06 - My husband, Harold, and I have been married for 33 years and have been living outside of Montesano for 30 years.  We have Harolds grandparents farmhouse and enjoy our home in the country.  Our two kids are grown, Kerry is 30 and lives in Las Vegas and Ben is 28 and lives a couple miles down the road.  Harold is a plumbing contractor and I have worked for a Chevy/Honda/Ford dealership since 1992.  Harold enjoys farming and raises cattle through the summer, we have only one horse now, and two Jack Russells that we call our "grandkids".  We enjoy traveling and camping throughout the northwest and try to stay out of the city.  I always enjoy reading the alumni newsletter and would love to hear from classmates.

CLASS OF 1970

Pam (Smith) Dietrich 7/25/05 - We had a wonderful summer.

Clover (Hamren) Longway 1/9/06 - I have been working as a piano teacher for many years and am currently serving as president of the Douglas-Elbert Music Teachers’ Association in an area just to the south of Denver, CO. My husband of 31 years, Ernie Longway, and I have three grown children. Kassi, married and a speech pathologist, is now home taking care of two adorable 9 month old twin boys. Twila lives at home with us and is a student as CU Denver; and Justin is stationed at Tinker Air Force Base just outside Oklahoma City and serves aboard the AWACS (jet that is a flying radar station).

Lyle Bennett 1/10/06 - At age 53, I finally went surfing for the first time in my life in December at Waikiki. I figured it was time for a boy born in Hawaii, visited again many times and having lived on Kauai, to go for it. I had thought about it when living on Kauai. But that was before laser surgery. Then I couldn't tell which way land was when I got out in the water. Not healthy. Now that I could see, I surfed--waves, not the internet. If in SoCal, come see me. I'm pastoring at the Arlington Adventist Church in Riverside. It's not far from La Sierra U.

Martin Lohne 9/3/06 - I'm an ER physician in Ohio and do a little flight instructing on the side. I'm one of the lucky people who doesn't have a boring job. Best regards.

CLASS OF 1971

Paul & Janet (Thatcher) Mallory 7/30/05 - Well, I do have some news from our family this summer. We just had our second grandchild last week. Our daughter Summer had a baby girl.  She has a 2 yr. old boy named Ethan and now a daughter names Karis. Summer has been married for several years and living in Chicago until last spring. We are fortunate to have both of our grandkids close by; great for all. Our son, Jordan got married last September and has been touring with his Christian Rock band, Number One Gun. They just released a new CD this month titled "Promises for the Imperfect". It is available in many music sources such as Best Buy. They are playing at many music festivals including this weekend at Spirit West Coast. He is the drummer, and needless to say we are pretty proud of his abilities. (all those years of drumming noise paid off)  Our youngest daughter Brook has been living in San Diego the past two years and is getting married this September.  The wedding will be at Paul's folk's home near Chico so we have been doing a lot of yard work preparing for the big day!! Her fiancé'  was born in Greece and it is looking like it will be a "Big Fat Greek Wedding". So that's what has been happening for us this year.  I have to say that being a grandparent is Great!!!

Teri (Manzano) Stockton 7/29/05 - Greetings, I have recently moved to  Santa Rosa, California and enjoy it here very much. I have retired from teaching and am privileged to work with a unique financial company which is rapidly growing throughout the country. Through technology, our proprietary software allows clients to be debt free including mortgages, usually within 5-12 years saving a minimum of a hundred thousand dollars in interest without increasing their monthly payments. I enjoy taking classes at the community college. In the past few years I have learned to communicate in Spanish (But don't check on my grammar) and have recently taken classes in Ancient Hebrew and Art. I enjoy gardening, walking. and will enjoy seeing you at our next reunion.

Marie (Tilstra) Aldinger  - For David and me, life is mostly the same with work, church, and community activities.  Jean will be a senior at PUC this year.  Thomas is headed for a school year abroad in the ACA program from PUC to Argentina.  My brother Dan Tilstra is beginning a new job in Orlando with Adventist Health Systems.  Douglas Tilstra is still teaching at Southern Adventist University.  My parents, John and Margaret Tilstra, have moved to Tennessee to be near Douglas.

Doug & Ginger (Prior) Carter 1/9/06 - It will be pleasant to see all of you middle aged folks come reunion time. Ginger assures me we are not getting “Old” just slipping gracefully into mid life. If 53 is mid life 106 should provide some real growth experiences. Ginger is the Director of Community Relations for Shascade Community Services. Shascade is a nonprofit organization providing an array of services for the mentally challenged and the vision impaired. Shascade serves Shasta County and the surrounding smaller feeder counties. I am employed by the Trinity County Behavioral Health Department as a dual diagnosis adolescent counselor. Together Ginger and I own and operate the Trinity River Recovery Lodge a nonprofit twenty-four bed Sober Living Environment. We will soon be licensed as a social model drug and alcohol recovery facility. We mostly serve clients who have a difficult time securing a bed in a recovery facility.  The reasons are usually monetary constraints and/or dual diagnosis challenges. God has blessed us with a supportive church family, the Palo Cedro SDA church. I really never envisioned my self loving a church family or supporting one. My how times have changed. Our church has provided a warm and loving environment for our recovery babies and has blessed us with walking the second mile for our facility. I imagined owning the Betty Ford some day not a rescue mission. Our dream is to build another facility for women with children. God has already provided the property. Feel free to contact us or come for a visit we would enjoy hearing from you.

Linda (Alexander) Brehm 1/9/06 - My husband retired in June from teaching.  We are currently living in La Pine, Oregon and enjoying the snow and snow skiing.

Mary Jansson 1/9/06 - I am living in the state of Alaska--Doing some work in the Community where I live...Hope you have a prosperous and sucessfull New Year in 2006!

Patricia (Stumph) Nicholas 1/9/06 - We do not have a lot of exciting news on our front, except that my husband, Ray, retired from medical practice 2 years ago this Feb.  If you haven't had a chance to try out retirement, you really should soon! :)  We have gone each year to the Eastern states to visit family and just soak up the fall colors which has really been so nice for us.  Our children are as follows.  Rosalie lives in Roseburg, OR. and works in the County courthouse in the judicial system.  Melody and her husband Nolan live in Vancouver, WA. Melody works as a Medical Technician and Nolan as a auto mechanic. Kevin is an ordained pastor in the Grants Pass area pastoring 2 churches in that region.  Tom is living in AZ and works as a ferrier, and plans to head to Oregon the first chance he gets.  And David lives in Portland Oregon and works as a Nurses Aide.  We do have a new addition.  She was 1 year old December 13.  Her name is Dutchess (a German Shepherd puppy :)  We think she is pretty special.  Unfortunately, we will be in Texas when the class reunion comes this year, but we will make a point of being there for our 40th, Lord willing.  We would love to hear news from all of you. Dr. Ray and Patty Nicholas

Cindy (Simon) Mayhle 8/7/06 - Married to Art. Graduated from PUC. Daughter Heather is a 2006 graduate of Andrews University. We are planning to move back West within a couple of years, when I retire. Currently work for the Social Security Administration in Baltimore. Am hoping to attend an alumni celebration soon. Would love to hear from fellow classmates.

Noella Brajnikoff 8/16/06 - I am still here in RI-- and am very happy. I have had some new stuff happen to me and mine. My youngest son, Nicholas completed the Science Engineering Apprenticeship program here at the Navy base at NUWC and was phenomenally successful. He was give the official title of "Mud-puppy Jr. Grade" by the divers at the Dive Locker, was invited to participate in the Internship program next summer, and invited to stay on during this school year, take some of his classes there, and to complete his 12th grade at Middletown High School.  He had such a wonderful experience here that he jumped at the chance to do that. I am thrilled that he will be with us during this coming school year.  He will have a chance to get Civil Service certification, Navy clearance, and all sorts of other chances that do not normally come to kids his age. Over all-- he has a chance to parlay all this towards a career in this field.

David &  Lois (Wethey) Zachary 8/15/06  –  Dave flew his kit, amateur-built plane for the first time July 16, and continues to rack up the time.  What a thrill it is!  Start to finish was 3 years, 4 months building time.  It is an RV-9A. Send emails if you can.  We'd love to hear from you.

David Hanscom 1/29/07  - I am currently living in Seattle, WA in a downtown apartment just south of the space needle.  I had lived in Sun Valley, Idaho from 1999 to 2003.  The Sun Valley experience was overall a disaster for me including a divorce.  I had to start over in Seattle re-developing my practice.  It over the last year has turned out to be a wonderful choice and I have become actively involved in several projects. I am practicing spine surgery at Swedish hospital.  About 3 years ago I committed to try to raise the standard of spine care in Seattle by trying to avoid surgery by developing an organized protocol for non-operative care.  It is since grown to involve much of the community and there has been of lot of support and interest.  I am also working on organizing our non-profit research center within our group and trying to make it a community resource.   Recently, I through my son's competition in mogul skiing learned some principles of sports psychology.  I have thought for many years that surgery is an athletic performance.  I have taken those principles to the operating room with some good success.  I am teaming up with my golf instructor to teach these principles to other surgeons. I have been re-married to Babs who runs a non-profit dance center in Berkeley, CA.  She is a tap dancer and started the "Beat" in the memory of her mentor Eddie Brown.  I spend a lot of time on airplanes but the long distance marriage is working much better than we would have thought. My 22 y/o son Nick is a competitive mogul skier trying to make the US ski team.  Although he is skiing at a very high level he is finding that final leap to the top difficult. I have a 16 y/o step-daughter, Jaz, who is very musical and creative.  She is in boarding school in Bath, Maine. I would love to spend time with any of you catching up either in CA or WA.  Please give me a call. David

Marie (Tilstra) Aldinger 2/12/07 - What's new with the Aldingers?  Our son Thomas (class of 2004) hasmoved to Orlando, Florida as of late December 2006.  Jean (class of 2002) is living and working in the St. Helena area since her graduation last June from PUC.  David and I continue to keep the home fires burning in Fortuna.

Jan (Roth) McDonald 2/28/07- At 53, I adopted my first child, Allison DuanYang. She lived in a Chinese orphanage for handicapped children until she was three. Bruce and I traveled to China to get her in May, 2005. For the last 2 years she's had physical therapy on her partially paralyzed right hand, arm, and shoulder. Her flexibility and strength has greatly improved. Bruce and I are also on a fast learning curve in parenting. Take care.

CLASS OF 1972

Rick Foster 7/19/05 - Alive and helping my wife Celeste chase our two boys (6 and 3 1/2). Attending Humboldt State while changing careers from IS (20+ years Business Applications Programmer/Analyst) to GIS (Geographic Information Systems). Working with geographic data (aerial photos, maps, GPS output) is much more interesting than columns of $$$ and #s of widgets. Ever been older than a lot of your instructors?

Anna Solodova Wong - I finished my M.S. in clinical psych (MFT) and am currently working on my Ph.D. in clinical psych.  I am working as a therapist at a PHP with the schizophrenic and bipolar population (very interesting), and am still a senior director with Mary Kay Cosmetics.  Other than that, nothing else is new.  Hope all of you and your family's are doing well.

Mary Ellen Kingsfield 7/25/05 - Would love to fill your summer edition with pages of exciting news of my life! Alas and alack there is absolutely nothing of interest. Maybe that means I should get a life.

Dave & Veronica (Milward) Crockett 8/22/05 - Dave and Veronica are still in Washington, though considered a position back in Oregon to be closer to kids (who are in Oregon and Cal).  Veronica is still doing special education teaching for the Yakima School District, and Dave is still pastoring.  Since Dave always needs a project,  and our home is done, he is planning on building a kit plane, (bribed me by promising visits to the kids and a whole plane parachute).

Willard & Louise (Leer) Ceccarelli 1/9/06 - We decided to make a big change in our lives in 2005.  In April, we sold our house of 16 years and ALL our stuff, traded in our Class C motor home on a 36' - 5th wheel, bought a diesel pickup to haul it, and this is HOME!  We bought a lot in an RV resort (on a golf course) in Aguanga, CA just east of Temecula.  Willard continues to work at Loma Linda Univ. Med. Ctr. and Louise works part-time from the RV, selling reverse mortgages for seniors.  Our oldest son, Isaiah lives in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where is he is a Jazz musician.  He and his fiance, Emilie, plan to marry in August of 2006.  Our youngest son, Joshua, lives about 80 miles away in Orange County.  We would love to hear from our classmates.

Susan (Stockton) Varesko 1/9/06 - Hello fellow classmates.  Life is very busy with the Varesko household.  Susan opened her new private practice as a nurse practitioner in her specialty with adult psychiatric mental health patients in Milton-Freewater, OR.  She continues her post-masters at OHSU to get certified in also treating children.  Her own four children are all doing well in college.  Dustin graduated last year from WWC in bioengineering and is attending his first year at LLU medical school.  Tristan will graduate from WWC this year with a business major and a religion minor.  Devon just earned his AA degree at WWCC and is deciding what his future life goals will be.  Tiffany is 18 years old and attending her junior year of college at our SDA college in Sagunto, Spain.  She plans to major in pre-dentistry and thinks she might like to be an orthodontist.  Susan just got back from traveling in Europe with Tiffany for just over a week and was impressed with Tiffany's language skills.  The highlight of the trip was taking a night train from Rome, Italy to Sicily and having the train cars unloaded onto a barge to cross the water past the boot of Italy to the Island of Sicily.  We particularly liked the gracious people there and their ancient city.  Life is good and we are each so very greatful for God's many blessings!

Mike & Lyn (Gibbs) Shepherd 1/9/06 - Greetings from Clearlake, CA!  Mike's in private practice here, Lyn is working part-time as manager and full-time as house renovator. Alysa (age 26) is in Atlanta, GA and engaged to Alan Darmody. The wedding will be in June and a CA reception in Santa Rosa on July 1st.  Justin is a Senior at Southern University in Collegedale, TN. and due to graduate Dec 07.

Dennis L. Gardner 1/9/06 - Hope all is well with you.  I am still practicing emergency medicine at a regional trauma center. This past September, I spent 11 days on the Gulf Coast as Medical Team Manager with California Task Force 7 Urban Search and Rescue Team. Hurricane Katrina sure created a mess!  It was difficult but very rewarding work. My wife Kelley continues her interest in animal rescue, especially neglected horses.  She is the "Dr Doolittle" of the family.

Alan Hanscom 2/25/06 - Well, hello everyone!  I just got through reading Margo Aparicio's highly entertaining chronicle, and I got inspired to try and reconnect with my old friends.  Even though I was only at Rio my junior year, I felt like it was a very good year, and I still miss the friends I made -- almost 35 years ago!  If you get a chance, email me.

Margo Aparicio 8/16/06

Turning 50

Turning 50 has its perks.  You get to become extremely close friends with Royalty like Lady Clairol and rub shoulders with intriguing foreigners like L'Oreal. You get to be regularly hounded by AARP to join them as a Senior Citizen with all its benefits and discounts.  (Helloooo?  Whatever happened to middle age?)  And among a host of other things, you get to start thinking about fun medical procedures like colonoscopies!

I turned 50 two years ago and I ignored, then gave passing thought to, and then seriously considered it time to heed the medical recommendations to have the once a decade procedure done.  My mantra to get me through the thought of it was, "Once every 10 years.  I can do this".

So the appointment was made two months down the road, and all kinds of excuses to cancel began crowding my mind:  I don't have the day-and-a-half to spare.  I might grow a rare but embarrassing zit on my backside.   Maybe I'd have to work that day.   But the most compelling excuse was I just didn't want a cold camera shoved up my butt and snaked through my guts by a total stranger.  Not that I'd have welcomed that sort of invasion from a friend either, you know.  The procedure was a tough thought to swallow no matter how I looked at it.

Speaking of swallowing:  The fun actually began before the procedure.  Two days ahead a prescription for a solution of colyte was picked up at the pharmacy.  No enema was prescribed, so I thought, "Wow!  Science has found a palatable, easy way to clear one's system!"  A little drinkie-poo and I'd be all set.  Well, when the extremely young pharmacy technician plopped my prescription on the counter, my eyes bugged out in disbelief.  I was handed a gallon sized jug with some powder in the bottom about half an inch deep.  Taped to the top were five flavor packs.  The instructions she gave were easy.  Choose only one flavor pack, pour it into the jug, fill the jug to the top with water, shake vigorously to blend then drink and then refrigerate.  Drink 8 oz every 10 minutes until it's all gone.  She shoved the jug towards me with a strange little smile (or was it a look of pity?) on her baby face.

So, after fasting on clear, non-red liquids for 24 hours, I was ready to begin my adventure.  At 4pm the day before my appointment with the camera, I began drinking the colyte solution.  My chosen flavor pack was some tropical mix.  Sounded good.  Tasted vile.  My mantra kicked in immediately.  "Once every 10 years.  I can do this".  I held my breath and gulped it down quickly.  One down, 15 glasses to go.

Now, I'd vigorously shaken the jug prior to my first glass as instructed, but hadn't bothered to read the reams of additional inserts they send home with each and every medicine prescribed.  These instructions all seem to generally go on and on about all the possible side effects.  No prescription is complete without warning you that the medicine you are about to take could possibly give you diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, fever, blindness, heart attack, liver damage, kidney failure, internal bleeding, seizures, strokes, or in rare cases death and to call your doctor if you exhibit signs of any of these

side effects.  (Yeah, I'll call from the grave.)  So, I didn't bother reading them.  Hind sight is 20/20.  I wish I'd read the inserts.

The instructions were a bit more complete than what the pharmacy tech had given.  I was to vigorously shake the  jug before EACH glassful.  I tasted no true tropical anything even from the first glass, but the intensity of the colyte flavor grew exponentially with each pouring.  I kept repeating over and over, "Once every 10 years.  I can do this".  By the time hour number one had passed, my mantra became a ceaseless chant, and  a whole lot more was coming out than was going down.  It was as if a fire hose had been connected to my backside.  It took nearly 3 hours to finish the jug.  Somehow I could just not gag down the last industrial strength 8 ounces.  That went down the drain which no doubt got cleaned out, too!  Exhausted, I went to bed early.

Morning dawned along with the realization there was no turning back.  My date with the camera had arrived.

My brother had decided to take the day off work and drive me to my 11 o'clock appointment.  He arrived by 10am and in no time I found myself checking in at the front desk only to be told by the happy, peppy, perky, too cheerful receptionist that the doctor was running an hour late.   They knew there was no way I would want to reschedule and go through another jug of "juice".  I shot a look at my brother who is well known for his lack of patience and heard him mutter under his breath, "Oh shit!  I have things to do."  I offered that he could come back a couple of hours later, but he declined leaving and said he'd sit it out in the waiting room.   We settled in reading when I finally got called 45 minutes later.

I was taken to the dressing room to disrobe.  Thankfully, they gave me two backless gowns to wear - no double exposures this day.  A handicapped husband and his nauseated wife entered and in order to afford them some privacy, I was immediately wisked to the "recovery" room.  There I was able to observe post "photo shoot"  patients arriving.  All were groggy and slurring their words.  I heard, "Is it over?" and "My stomach hurts." and "I feel sick", but there was no turning back now.  I was already on a gurney, the blood pressure cuff was already in place, I'd already answered the same set of questions twice, and a nurse was smacking the back of my hand to get a vein up for her unsuccessful attempt of jabbing in the I.V.  Somehow I think she was just getting out some work frustrations by smacking me, because she never did get the I.V. in place (and I have huge veins)!  An anesthesiologist did it instead.

Nearly an hour later they finally wheeled me into "the room".  I could see my brother's blood pressure rising as time ticked on, but I was engaged in conversation with the chatty nurse who would play the roles of drug inducer and "photographer's assistant".

The doctor who looked all the world to be just another nurse in scrubs zipped merrily past my doorway and waved, did an about face, and whirled in to greet me.  "Hello!  I'm Dr. Proctor.  Did you enjoy your little prep work yesterday?"  Startled stupid I stammered out the truth, "I couldn't get the last glass down.  I gagged on it."  (What was in these drugs now flowing into my veins?  Truth serum?)  "Good answer!" he cheerily chirped.  "If you'd said you enjoyed i
